What can I really say about this record? Madvillainy is one of my favorite albums ever. Me and my roommate have been getting back into it pretty heavy lately. Quoting lyrics back and forth. Nerding out in a major way. These are MF Doom's best rhymes by far, and Madlib's beats are on another level entirely. Its crazy that he did most of them on an SP-303 in a hotel room. I had a huge poster of the album cover on my college dorm room wall for a while. No one really knew who MF Doom was back then, and I think it freaked people out a little bit. The art concept was actually inspired by a Madonna album cover. Weird. I think they should let me write one of those 33 1/3 books about Madvillain. Shit would be super focused.

Stones Throw just released Madvillainy 2 which is a new version of the same album with brand new beats. Madlib was tired of waiting for Doom to finish the lyrics to the next Madvillain record, so he just re-did the first one for kicks during a 10 hour plane ride to Tokyo. Dude is a beast. Its hard to top the OG, but after a couple spins Madvillainy 2 gets real comfortable. Its kind of like Madlib didn't listen to the album for a while and tried to remake the beats by memory but didn't really remember how it went in the first place.

Admittedly, when I first heard about Cousin Cole & Pocketknife's Tambourine Dream mix, I was turned off completely. A new millennium indie-folk greatest hits collection remixed DJ style isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I checked up on it anyway. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The Flagrant Fowl boys turned what first appears to be just another lame DJ gimmick into a very subtle and ingenious remix project.

This particular track is a secret late night DJ weapon of mine. I miss the days when DJs would end the night with some softer music instead of raging until the lights get turned on, leaving the crowd to collect themselves and wander home hazy and confused.

So here's the deal with Endless Boogie. The band is mostly older dudes, like 40+. They're from New York. A few years ago they started playing together, nothing crazy, just some good riffs, the throwback rock vibe, probably some beer. Then someone asked them to play a show, so they did. No big deal. A few more people asked them to play. One time they played in Philly. I went. It was rad. Now they have a record out, and it rules. Endless Boogie just find what sounds like the best part of any great rock song and play it over and over forever. I wish I was in this band.

I decided to pick a song that maybe not as many people will be talking about. Malik B, Kweli, and Black Thought all sound real sharp and the beat is super tough. Pretty much the M.O. for the entire album. That's ?uestlove on the hook by the way. Nice work to one of my favorite bands from my favorite city.
